Cost of Living in St. Louis: Taxes, Housing, and Everyday Expenses

If you’re weighing a move to St. Louis, the cost of living is usually one of the first things people look up, and one of the first things that surprises them once they actually arrive. On paper, St. Louis looks affordable compared to coastal cities. In practice, there are a handful of local quirks, especially around taxes, that can catch new residents off guard if no one warns them in advance. This guide breaks down what you’ll actually pay to live here, not just the marketing version, and if you’re already comparing neighborhoods or planning logistics, our guide to moving to St. Louis covers the broader relocation picture alongside this one.

Housing Costs

Housing is where St. Louis earns its reputation as an affordable place to live. Median home prices in the metro area sit well below the national average, and that gap widens even further compared to cities like Chicago, Denver, or anywhere on either coast. Renters see a similar advantage. A one-bedroom apartment in most St. Louis neighborhoods rents for a fraction of what the same unit would cost in a larger metro.

That said, “affordable” varies a lot depending on where in the metro you land. Housing in Clayton, Kirkwood, or parts of the Central West End runs noticeably higher than the metro average, while areas like South City or parts of St. Louis County stay closer to the lower end. If housing costs are the main driver of your move, our housing market overview goes into more detail on pricing trends by area, and it’s worth reading before you commit to a lease or a purchase in a specific neighborhood. Once you’ve settled on an area, our St. Louis moving team covers the entire metro, so wherever you land, the logistics side is handled.

Personal Property Tax

This is the one that trips up almost everyone moving in from another state. Missouri charges an annual personal property tax on vehicles, and it’s separate from the sales tax you pay when you buy a car. If you own a vehicle and live in Missouri on January 1st of a given year, you’ll owe a bill later that year based on the assessed value of everything you own that qualifies: cars, trucks, boats, and, in some cases, business equipment.

The amount varies by county and by the value of what you own, but it’s not a small number. People moving from states without this kind of tax are often blindsided by their first bill, especially if no one mentioned it during the move-planning process. If you’re relocating from out of state, it’s worth budgeting for this ahead of time rather than discovering it in the mail months after you’ve settled in.

Utilities

Utility costs in St. Louis run close to the national average, with a bit of seasonal swing. Summers get hot and humid, which drives cooling costs up in July and August, while winter heating costs climb from December through February. Electric and gas providers vary by which part of the metro you’re in, so it’s worth checking coverage for your specific address before move-in day, especially if you’re settling in one of the outer suburbs where provider coverage can differ block to block. Setting up utility transfers ahead of time is one of those details that’s easy to overlook when you’re focused on the bigger logistics, and our local moving team can walk you through it if you’re not sure where to start.

Water and trash service costs are generally reasonable and don’t fluctuate much seasonally, which helps offset the summer and winter utility spikes.

Groceries and Everyday Spending

Grocery prices in St. Louis track close to the national average, maybe slightly below depending on where you shop. The city has a strong local food scene, from the Soulard Farmers Market to smaller neighborhood grocers, alongside the usual national chains. Eating out is generally cheaper than in larger metros, and that gap gets more noticeable the farther you are from downtown.

Transportation costs stay manageable too. Gas prices tend to sit below the national average, and while public transit exists through MetroLink and MetroBus, most residents rely on cars, so factor typical car ownership costs, insurance, maintenance, and the personal property tax mentioned above, into your overall budget rather than assuming transit will offset a big chunk of spending. If you’re trying to keep move-related costs down too, handing off the packing side of things through our packing services often ends up cheaper than the boxes, tape, and time most people underestimate when packing themselves.

Healthcare Costs

St. Louis has a strong healthcare infrastructure, anchored by major systems like BJC HealthCare and Mercy, along with a dense concentration of specialists tied to the region’s academic medical centers. Healthcare costs here run close to the national average, and having multiple large systems in the area tends to keep options competitive rather than leaving residents dependent on a single provider network. If you’re moving for a job that comes with employer coverage, your out of pocket costs will largely mirror what you’re used to elsewhere. If you’re securing your own coverage, it’s worth comparing plans locally rather than assuming your previous state’s rates will carry over, since premiums and provider networks vary by state.

Childcare

Childcare costs in St. Louis run below the national average compared to larger metros, though prices still vary significantly by neighborhood and by whether you’re looking at in home care, a daycare center, or a nanny share arrangement. Areas with strong school districts, like Clayton or Kirkwood, tend to have more competition for spots and correspondingly higher costs, while other parts of the metro offer more availability at a lower price point. If childcare costs are a major factor in your budget, it’s worth researching specific neighborhoods rather than relying on a citywide average, since the range between areas can be significant.

Income and Earnings Tax

If you work within the city limits of St. Louis, keep in mind there’s a local earnings tax that applies in addition to state and federal income tax. This applies whether you live in the city or commute in from the suburbs, so it’s worth understanding before you accept a job offer or sign a lease based on a take home pay estimate that didn’t account for it.

Entertainment and Recreation

One of the underrated parts of the St. Louis cost of living picture is how much free and low cost entertainment the city offers. The Saint Louis Zoo, the Saint Louis Art Museum, and the Missouri History Museum are all free to enter, which is unusual for a city this size and adds up to real savings if you have a family or simply enjoy getting out of the house regularly. Forest Park, which houses several of these attractions, is larger than Central Park and free to use for walking, running, or just spending an afternoon outside. Paid entertainment, Cardinals games, concerts, and the general dining and nightlife scene, tends to run cheaper than in larger metros as well, which helps stretch a household budget further than the same lifestyle would in a pricier city.

Sales Tax

Missouri’s state sales tax rate is relatively low compared to many states, but local jurisdictions add their own rates on top of it, so the actual rate you pay at checkout depends heavily on which municipality you’re shopping in. Combined rates in parts of the St. Louis metro can run higher than the state rate alone would suggest, since city, county, and special district taxes all stack together. It’s a minor factor compared to housing or personal property tax, but it’s worth knowing that the rate on your receipt will vary depending on whether you’re shopping downtown, in the county, or out in one of the further suburbs.

Putting It Together

None of these individual costs are dramatic on their own, but together they paint a more accurate picture than a single “cost of living index” number ever will. Housing is genuinely affordable here, groceries and dining are reasonable, and day-to-day expenses are manageable. The personal property tax and city earnings tax are the two line items that most often get missed by people moving in from out of state, so building those into your budget early saves you from an unpleasant surprise later.

Once you’ve got a realistic budget in place, the next step is figuring out logistics, and that’s where reaching out to our team directly tends to help most, whether your questions are about timing, pricing, or what a quote actually includes.

August 10, 2026

Worst experience ever. They stole $200 cash from our shelf. Treadmill cord was sliced in half. They left food and drink trash all over our house. Stuff was put in all the wrong places (even though I color coded everything for them and verbally told them where it goes). So now I need to hire people to come move furniture around. Have never felt so violated. Cannot recommend this company.

This was a fairly complicated move made smooth and efficient by Mike, Michael, and Vaughn! These men can move the world! Every item was carefully wrapped and unwrapped, furniture was placed exactly where we wanted it, and no request was inconvenient. I was a total pain with wanting things moved here and there, and they were so patient and kind! The move was made smooth and easy by these three professionals! Thank you!

They were absolutely AMAZING. Worked from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and moved a big house full of the stuff of 5 kids and 2 adults into another big house--no complaints, so pleasant, polite and professional. We enjoyed working with them all day and felt entirely comfortable having them move all our things, they took great care to make sure things were done safely and correctly. They worked great as a team and we felt like they were on our team as well! We would recommend them without reservation, and use them again (though we DO NOT want to move again any time soon!!!). Having furniture taken apart and the reassembled was an incredible service.
